June 14, 2025. Today was significant in the United States. Millions of people raised their voices peacefully in the context of #NoKingsDay. I was among them, only after another significant event - the National Brain Tumor Association Northern California Brain Tumor Walk! Held at the San Francisco Zoo, the event brought together over a thousand individuals in the brain tumor community.
Baur and I were a part of the UCSF team this year, and I was very glad to see fellow brain tumor survivors in person. I've gotten to know this special group of individual over the past year through UCSF Brain Tumor Center's Thrivers Group. I was also moved to see so many people attending in honor of loved ones who have passed away.
Speakers emphasized hope, courage, and resilience during the program, as well as the need for continued fundraising, advocacy and awareness. I am so appreciative of all who partipated or fundraised, and heard that the event raised over $200,000 to support the needs of brain tumor patients and families.
The NBTS event was the first in a series that I will be attending this summer - next up is the ABTA walk in Oakland on September 6th and then the fifth annual Fast Track to A Cure Bay Area benefitting Oligo Nation in Richmond on September 27th. If you read this blog, I would love to see you at either or both!
As one of today's speakers noted, cheers to a future where long-term survivorship for individuals with brain tumors is the norm, not the exception.
